Gautam
Pal was born in a traditional family of modelers of
Krishnagar (a tiny town in West Bengal) in the year
1949. During his study in college with Physics he made
portrait sculptures under the guidance of his father
Sculptor K.C.Paul.
After completing his
graduation inspired by his mother Mrs. Rekha Paul he joined the Government College of
Art and Craft, in Kolkata and worked under Principal C.Kar and Professor Sunil Paul.
He was admitted directly to the 3rd year and in 1972 he completed his Diploma
from the Art College.
He then joined the Academia
di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan in Italy and completed Diploma in 1974 working under
Professor Luciano Minguzzi.In 1974 he returned to his native land and opened a studio of
his own, naming, Studio Di Scultura and also worked with his father.In 1979 he
again visited Italy and France to see the works of the museums. He presented a bronze bust
of Pope John Paul (IV) and a pencil drawing of Pope John Paul to the Pope at Vatican City.
In 1986 he started developing an open-air sculpture garden near Krishnagar.
In 1992 he completed another
studio at Salt Lake, Kolkata and now lives there with his wife Smita and daughter Koel.
His works are installed in different parts of India and also in the National Gallery of
Modern Art, New Delhi.In 1988, his standing statue of Mahatma Gandhi was installed in
Moscow, USSR which was inaugurated by the President of India Mr. Venkat Raman and the
President of USSR Mr. Andre Gromico. Gradually his works are being in various parts of the
world like France, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Canada, Myanmar, China, Prague, Yemen, Brazil,
and also in different parts of USA.
In 2000, his standing statue of
Mahatma Gandhi was installed in Washington D.C. which was inaugurated by the Prime
Minister Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee and the president of USA Mr. Bill Clinton.
He works mainly on bronze, marble,
granite, and Wood. He participated in various exhibitions in India and also made solo
exhibitions in Kolkata and Bombay.
Gautam Pal won awards from the
Government Art College and thrice from the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata. He took life
sittings of National Professor Suniti Chatterjee, Prof. Tomaso Marini, Governor D.B.Pandey
and Pundit Ravi Shankar.
Presently he is making one marble
statue of Sri Sri Ramkrishna for installation in Dhaka, Bangladesh and a double life size
sitting statue of Poet Rabindra Nath Tagore for installation at the Lalit Kala Academy,
New Delhi.
He is also making a bronze bust of Gandhiji for installation
in Chile and also bronze busts of Tagore for Dublin
and Sweden. A 9ft. statue of Mahatma Gandhi is also
in progress for installation at Chicago, USA.
